5 tips on how to write a case study

A case study is a piece of writing where the writer makes the readers go through a situation where a problem occurs. The background of the problem is also presented, how the problem is affecting the company or the people and how it can be solved. In some case studies, it was also discussed how solving the problem will help the company or the people afterwards. Case study helps the readers to know how to solve a problem and helps to gain knowledge about the company and the scenario.

Let's discuss seven tips that writers must keep in mind while writing a case study.

  • 1. Describe the issue - You can start this paragraph by using a quote or a proverb. You need first to describe the main problem and make your readers understand why discussing the problem is important. You need to write and describe the problem so that the readers will be able to know the actual cause. For example, In several Zara case studies, we can see how the company has faced losses due to COVID-19. This is relatable because due to the global pandemic, each and every business has faced loss. Do not describe too much otherwise; there can be a chance that the reader may get bored. Write about the issue a little bit and then let them think.

  • 2. Proving the background - It is the information by which you will know the readers why it is a problem. In part, you will have to include a few facts and figures to help them understand it easily. Anecdotal information can be included in this part. You can write like ' The workers at Tesco were already facing problems about this and the same we also knew from the Tesco case study. In this, you can also give the readers some clues and thus, they will be able to think. They will be able to know how they can solve the puzzle.

  • 3. Describe the solution - In this part, you will write about the strategies and the methods which can be followed to solve the issue. This part can also contain some personal research of the author. You can also include facts and graphs in this part. You can write like 'Previously in the Sony case study we can see that the sales were down and thus reducing the price of their headphones may increase the sales’. Always discuss the key elements used to derive the solution and always be clear about the goal of the solution.

  • 4. Evaluate the response of solution - Evaluate clearly. Make the readers understand how it can be the solution. Make them understand how it will affect the people and the organisation in many ways. If the solution is already implemented, then you can evaluate the effect of that on the readers.

  • 5. The story - In this part, you will write the whole story in short. Write 2-3 about every paragraph. You don't need to cover everything, just cover up the important points.

Summary

Last but not least, make sure that the problem you are choosing is relatable to your readers. If they are somehow unable to relate, then the whole case study will not entertain them much. Before writing about the company, gather facts and figures about them.
